Quote #1
Said By: Ishmael
Page: 160
"I hated that "it is not your fault" line that all the staff members said every time anyone spoke about the war."

Significance: I thought that this quote was significant because I would feel good if someone told me that it was not my fault. I understand why Ismael feels this way though. I'm sure he thinks that he is tough and brave and when people tell him it is not his fault he doesn't feel that way anymore.

Character Judgement: I think that Ishmael is getting a little bit better. Going to school is probably taking his mind off the war and violence a little. Also I think that talking to Esther (the nurse) is also helping him even though he doesn't realize it.

Question: Do you think that Ishmael and Esther will become friends, and do you think that this will help Ishmael recover? Why?

Quote #2: "I am your nurse and that's all. If you want to be friends with me, you will have to ask me and I will have to trust you first, she said. I smiled, because I was thinking the same thing."

Significance: This quote is significant because now that Ishmael is in the city and he is getting some help he can make some friends and try to live a more normal life. This quote made me very happy because he is making a friend and because he smiled. I think that Esther will act as his therapist and as his friend

Character Judgement/Connection: I think that from what I have read, Esther sound very kind and caring. I think that having her around will really help Ishmael. Also I can realte to this because being around my friends always makes me feel better.

Question: What other help do you think Ishmael will get while he is in the city?

Response #1: I would to feel good if someone said "its not your fault," to me. But to Ishamel I guess not. I don't get it either why he feels this way. It really is not his fault that he got stuck in this war and that he became a soldier because of the rebels.

Question #1: I think they will become friends. Ishamel has already recieved gifts from Esther. She is a very nice nurse. I think she will also cure Ishamel very well because they are good friends and whenever they see each other they feel like family. They also give good comapany to each other. They are not going to be alone most of the time anymore.

Response #2: I agree. I am glad that he is getting help in some way. I think that Ishamel needs to recover and relax from all the stress he has been in. Those were some really hard situations that Ishamel had to face.

Question: I really don't know. I think that would be the only help he would get. All he really needs is someone to check up on him once in a while and heal the wounds he has. That is why Esther is there.

Response1: I think that the staff is just saying that to try to make the ex-soldiers feel better. I think that it annoys Ishmael because they keep saying it and they don't really mean it.

Answer 1: I think that Ishmael will become friends with Esther. I think that this will help Ishmael recover because he will have a friend always there to help him.

Response2: I think that Esther is very smart. This is because she isn't forcing Ishmael to be friends, which would push him away. Instead shes giving him the choice. I think that Ishmael will eventually befriend the nurse.

Answer2: I think that Ishmael will get mental help from the city. Just being around normal civilians helps your mind I think.
