A Long Way Gone

Quote #1: "At the hospital Esther put the Bob Marley cassette on the tape player, and we began to mime "Three Little Birds" together. "Don't worry about a thing" we sang "cause every little thing gonna be all right..."

Significance: This quote was said after Ishmael met his uncle. I think that this quote is significant because it shows that he is happy about his uncle. But I think that he is still a little unsure about leaving to live with him. I think this because he is a little afraid to love anyone, and he is probably used to being where he is and going to see Esther everyday.

Character Judgement: So far being at this camp has helped Ishmael so much. When he first came there he got into fights and ignored the staff there. Now he is almost all better and he has lots of friends like Esther and Mohamed. I think that this is great for Ishmael, and I'm glad that he can go and live with his uncle.

Question #1: If you were in this position would you be excited about living with your uncle, or would you be a little hesitant? explain

Quote #2: "We walked so many times on the same gravel road that I could close my eyes and still avoid all the big rocks on the road."

Significance: I think that this quote was significance because it shows the Ishmael is getting used to his uncle and he really trusts him. He takes long walks with him and they talk about Ishmael's life before the war and about his father. I think that this is really nice for Ishmael because he has someone to talk to about his life before the war.

Connection: I can relate to this quote because I think that it is good to talk about your past and especially for him because it makes you feel so much better and it is nice to talk to an adult because they listen better and understand you more.

Connection: If you were Ishmael would you feel comfortable taking to your uncle after just meeting him or would you wait a little? explain

Response1: I think that this represents that Ishmael is safe and that from now on everything will be alright. I hope that this will actually be true. Ishmael deserves it after all that he has been through.

Answer#1: I would be happy to live with my Uncle. My Uncle and Aunt are both very nice. I would be happy to stay with family after what has happened to me, if I was in Ishmael's position.

Response#2: I think that this quote means that Ishmael is finally settling in. He is now comfortable in his new "habitat".

Answer#2: I would be a little hesitant if I had never met my uncle. After a while I would get comfortable. After all he is the only family I have left.

Response #1: I never thought about it like that. I thought he would be excited to live with his uncle. They did'nt find most of his family so I think he would be really happy that they found one of his family members. I guess it is better then living with people that you don't know.

Question: I would be excited. I would not want to live with anyone else that was not related to me. I think it would be kind of awchward especially at an old age where you can remeber that you were adopted. I rather stay with my uncle then with a foster family.

Response #2: I like this quote a lot. It shows that the uncle is takind good care of him and binding with him a lot. He has someone to look up to now instead of looking up to no one. I think he feels so happy right now.

Question: I think it would be kind of weird and I wouldn't know what to talk about to him, but after a while I would be a little more confortable and feel a little more loving toward him.
