A Long WAy Gone #2

Quote #1:
Said by: Saidu
Page: 70

"Saidu spoke in a very deep voice as if someone was speaking through him, how many more times do we have to come to terms with death before we find safety?"

Significance: This quote relates to the question about what life was like before immigrating. It is significant because it shows how these boys have had to grow up very fast to survive the war. They have been almost killed many times already. I think the deeper voice is symbolizing maturity in Saidu.

Character Judgement: So far it seems like the boys Ishmael is traveling with are very kind and are feeling the same way Ishmael is feeling. I think that he is being very quite while he is with them because he is so sad and he thinks that nothing he could say will make anything better.

Question #1: Do you think that the boys will be separated? if so, how do you think that will happen?

Quote #2: The most difficult part was the loneliness. It became unbearable each day.
Said By: Ishmael

Significance: This quote is significant because it is right after Ishmael has been separated from his brother and his friends. I also chose this quote because for me this was one of the saddest parts because being alone for so long would be torture, and not knowing if his family and friends had been killed or not.

Connection: I can't really connect to this quote, I know what it is like to be lonely but I can't imagine loneliness to this extreme. It must have been terrible.

Question #2: Do you think that Ishmael will be taken by the rebels? If so, how?

Response: You picked out a very good quote and made a very good point. I like this quote because I think they do take risks that go across the path of death. They take very risky challenges each day of their life in this war. I liked how you related to this quote to the question, "what life was like before immigrating." I liked how you related the quote to this question because it does seem that when they immigrated here they had been growing up very fast. I also agree that they have almost been killed many times and it is not a really safe place since they immigrated.

Question: I think they might. They might have to be separated because a rebel might take one and not the other. One could even be possibly killed. I don't really know what will happen. On the other hand they could be super aware and be hidden most of the time. Great question!

Response: I agree. I would hate to be alone all by myself with no company. It can be scary because you don't want to be scared by yourself because no one could help you. Ishamel has no one to take care of and no one to take of him. He now has to be super aware of the environment around him. It feels harder and scarier with anyone with you or around you.

Question: I think so. Rebels are pretty much everywhere. They are watching everyone moves. If he is not careful he probably will be taken. I don't think rebels are going to just let them go. There is going to be some consequences if rebels catch them.

Response#1: I think that the boys will have to continue to deal with near death experiences until they do find safety. For now Ishmael just needs to keep trying to survive everyday and not give up hope.

Answer#2 I think that the boys might get separated. This is because if the group encounters rebels, they might split up and run away. Or they might even get in an argument and go their own way.

Response#2: I think that being alone for extended amounts of time is very difficult. Especially if you are very social and you like to be around people. It would be even harder with all the troubles of trying to stay alive each day.

Answer #2: I think that Ishmael might possibly be captured. I think that he would get captured if he got hunted down or he crossed paths with a rebel.

Quote #1: Response/Comment: I liked how you related the deep voice to maturity in the significance. I think the deep voice also shows how the war has affected him.
Question #1: Answer: I think they will be separated if they get caught in the middle of an attack. If they don’t get in the middle of an attack then they will separate because of different opinions on what to do.

Quote #2: Response/Comment: The quote that you chose showed how the results of the war effected Ishmael emotionally. I really liked this quote as well.
Question #2: Answer: no I don’t think so. If he did then he would probably be dead and he wouldn’t have been able to write the book.
