A Long Way Gone #1

Quote #1
Said by Ishmael Beah
Page: 6

"I loved the dance (Hip-Hop) and particularly enjoyed learning the lyrics because they were poetic and it improved my vocabulary."

Significance: This quote is significant because it tells me a little bit about the character. Also because it make me think about how sad it is that he has no idea of what is about to happen to him and his family and at this point he is thinking about music not war.

Connection: I picked this quote because when people think of children in Africa they think that life there is so different and foreign to us. But this quote show that we are not so different and we can relate to people with different cultures and people who live all around the world.

Question #1: How do you think the Hip-Hop will tie in to the rest of the story?

Quote #2
Said by: Ishmael Beah

"There were all kinds of stories told about the war that made it sound as if it were happening in a faraway and different land."

Significance: I think this quote is significant because this is how most people here view the war that is going on in Africa, and yet he is saying this while he is living in Sierra Leone.

Connection: I connect to this quote because I feel this way about the civil wars in Africa and the war in Iraq also. They seem like they are happening in a totally different land.

Question #2: How do you think Ishmael felt when he realized that war had come to where he lived?

Quote #1: Response/Comment: I agree, I think this quote shows a lot about the charater and what he likes and how he needs to work on his English. I think this was a good quote to choose and I admire how you said “at this point he is thinking about music not war.”
Question #1: Answer: I think that Hip-Hop will come into the story some other times also. I think it will be a way for him to escape from war into his own peaceful place.

Quote #2: Response/Comment: I think that this was a quote that everyone can relate to because when we hear about war we think of it as if it was in a story or something but it’s a lot closer than we think. This was a well chosen quote.
Question #2: Answer: I think that he felt surprised. If a war came to my home I would feel rushed or scared and defiantly surprised.

Quote #1: Response/ Comment: I also think it is sad that he is thinking about music then war. He doesn't really know what cruel and hard things are going to come at him.

Question #1: I don't really know. I think that Hip- Hop won't really tie into the story because I think the war is going to get worst and he is going to concentrate more on the war then to his music in order to survive.

Quote #2: Response/ Comment: You brought up a good point. I never really thought about the war like that. That it feels like they are in total different places.

Question #2: I think that Ishamel thought that he was going be killed, it was going to be cruel, scary and tragic. He probably didn't know what expect from this war.
